How to improve employee wellbeing

It’s becoming increasingly clear that wellbeing in the workplace has never been more important. The workplace can have a massive impact on mental health – in best-case scenarios, businesses promote good practices, and employees are encouraged to protect their wellbeing.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Research shows that January 2021 was the worst in recorded history for employee wellbeing. This suggests there’s a lot of work to be done to improve the situation. And with 80% of organisations seeing rising demand for mental health support, what can your business do to improve the wellbeing of your people?

Put mental health at the top of your agenda

The Covid-19 crisis has had a huge impact on mental health. As businesses look to return to pre-Covid ways of working, employee wellbeing must be a priority to support people as they adjust to the changes.

Consider retraining your team on how to deal with mental health issues and appoint mental health first aiders. Communication and knowledge are both important in supporting the wellbeing of your staff.

Create an inclusive environment

Organisations with diverse and inclusive practices create a happier working environment for your employees. One in seven businesses have introduced diversity and inclusion policies over the last year and there’s demand for more.

As your business learns to adapt to working life post-lockdown, ensure you’re including your people in the decision making process and remember that every individual has had a different experience throughout the pandemic. A one size fits all approach to the new working environment won’t cut it.

Prioritise learning and development

94% of employees say they would stay at a company longer if they were given the opportunity to learn and develop new skills. And the good news is that learning and development doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise. It’s likely that you already have a wealth of knowledge and experience within your own organisation, use this to give your people the opportunity to share knowledge and create clear paths for progression and professional development. Employees that feel valued and appreciated are happier and more engaged with the work they’re doing.

Flexibility is the future

As a result of the pandemic, the majority of people have experienced a shift in working life. Some are permanently working remotely, others have changed industries. It’s important that businesses are there to support employees through these adjustments.

One major lesson from the Covid-19 crisis is that flexible working… works. Many employees and business owners have discovered that the Monday to Friday, 9-5 work model isn’t the only way to do things. If you have the opportunity to give your people the chance to work when they’re most productive, your business and your people can reap the benefits.
