With Covid restrictions easing in England, workforces across the UK are finally making their way back to the office. But will the office they return to look the same as it did when they left (some in March 2020!)
For those of you about to make the long-anticipated return to the office, here are a few features you should look out for, or consider putting in place in the post-pandemic workplace.
Sanitisation stations
Cleanliness and hygiene (or possibly a lack thereof) were definitely highlighted when the pandemic hit. In line with the government’s Covid restrictions, many workplaces had to up the ante when it came to their clearing regimes. A large number decided to install permanent sanitation stations throughout their buildings. Now that they’re in, it’s difficult to see why they would now remove them.
The same goes for personal hygiene. It may not be uncommon for you to be asked to bring your own mugs or glasses to the offices and only use your designated utensils to avoid any cross contamination. The days of communal kitchens may soon be a thing of the past.
Desk protection and PPE
While masks might not be a mandatory requirement, there are a number of people that would prefer to keep them in place. While the vaccination roll out is still underway, some people feel more comfortable keeping their face coverings until they’ve been fully jabbed or until cases are lower.
Make sure you provide teams with clear guidance around face coverings as everyone’s preferences will be different. You may choose to put your own firm guidance in place.
It’ll also be common to see screens remain in place at desks and other areas throughout the building. Similar to the sanitisation stations, they provide an extra barrier between workers and bacteria and other viruses – they’re therefore likely to remain a permanent fixture.
Video conferencing space
Some offices were already equipped with small, private telephone booths for calls. However, video conferencing technology has come a long way in the past year and has in many ways, out stripped telecommunications. Stocks in Zoom went up by a staggering 450% in 2020. And for many businesses, remote working with video conferencing is their forever normal.
It’ll therefore be important for workplaces to ensure they have quiet, secure spaces for employees to take video calls without being disturbed.
Changes to social areas
A lot of people have been long anticipating the return to the office because they’re looking forward to the social life that comes with it. However, some workplaces may choose to keep some restrictions in place to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable.
If you’re planning on making changes to the guidance around communal areas, make sure you clearly communicate your decision to your staff.
